The friends stood on the edge of the woods, staring at the back of the school. Above them, the sun was just starting to go down. The Crystal Prep football team was still practicing on the nearby field, running the last of their plays. Twilight turned and studied her friends, making sure their shirts were all tucked the right way and their vests were buttoned how Principal Cinch liked. She reached over and straightened Pinkie Pie’s tie.

“Do you think anyone will notice we’re not really Crystal Prep students?” Applejack asked. She straightened herself up and narrowed her eyes, making the meanest face she could.

“Not if you keep making that expression,” Twilight said. “You’ll fit in perfectly.”

After they’d left Sunset Shimmer’s, they’d gone to Twilight’s house to dig through her closet. She hadn’t given away her old Crystal Prep uniforms yet. She still had three that were in perfect condition, and two that didn’t fit anymore. Then there were two more that had ripped seams and buttons that were falling off. She was supposed to throw them away, but she’d never gotten around to it.

Now Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash looked the most rumpled out of their crew, and Sunset’s outfit was so tight it looked as if her vest might burst. But Twilight hoped they’d pass for real Crystal Prep students, if only until they got the machine and got out of there. Hopefully no one would be looking at them too closely….

“Now, let’s stick to the plan,” Twilight said. “There are three science labs, all right next to one another. I don’t know which room Rising Star was talking about—I’d bet it’s in one of the lab’s storage closets for safekeeping. Let’s split up, check each lab, and meet back in the far stairwell.”

“You’re sure the door will be open?” Pinkie Pie asked. She pointed to the school’s back door. It was one of the only entrances that was unlocked after hours. Students used it when they forgot something in their locker.

“It’s always open,” Twilight Sparkle said. “But we need to keep a lookout for Mr. Crimson, the janitor. He’s one of the only people in the school at this hour.”

“Yeah…” Fluttershy said. “And we need to watch out for Rising Star. What if he comes back to work on the machine?”

“Let’s hope that doesn’t happen,” said Sunset Shimmer. “Ready?” She looked to Fluttershy and Rarity, who’d agreed to search the first lab with her. Twilight would go with Pinkie Pie, and Rainbow Dash would search the last lab with Applejack. Fluttershy and Rarity nodded, and the three took off toward the school, disappearing through the back door.

“Are you sure not bringing Flash was a good idea?” Pinkie Pie quietly asked no one in particular. “He was the one who told us about Rising Star.”

Rainbow Dash shook her head. “It’s fine. We told him we were doing this. He doesn’t need to be here, especially not after what he said…. ”

She didn’t finish the sentence, but Twilight knew what she meant.
